What a word search practices
A word search looks simple, but finding a word means holding its spelling in mind while scanning a page of letters. For children who are learning to read, that is quiet, useful practice.
Spelling
Children check a word letter by letter, and notice patterns like the “tch” in Witch or the double “l” in Holly.
Letter recognition
Grids are printed in capitals while the word list keeps normal spelling, so children match upper- and lowercase forms.
Careful looking
Scanning rows, columns and, at Explorer level, diagonals builds patience and attention to detail.
New vocabulary
Themed lists bring in words like Cranberry, Firefly or Cauldron that are worth talking about together.
How every puzzle is made
Each theme has six ready-made puzzles: three at Starter level and three at Explorer level. Every word list was chosen for its theme, and every word is verified to be in its grid before the PDF is built.
- Every word on the list is really in the grid. A puzzle that could not fit all its words is never published.
- The letters in the preview are the letters you download. The puzzle does not change when you print it again.
- The filler letters are checked in every direction against a list of words that shouldn’t appear in a children’s puzzle.
- Each answer key is drawn from the same data as its puzzle, so the circles always match.
Frequently asked questions
Are these word searches really free?
Yes. Every puzzle and answer key is a free PDF. There is no account, no email sign-up and no watermark across the puzzle.
What age are the word searches for?
They are written for children aged about 6 to 9. Starter suits early readers; Explorer suits children who read with more confidence. Age is only a guide, so choose by reading level.
Do the puzzles come with answers?
Yes. Each puzzle has its own answer key, downloaded separately so it doesn’t end up on the same page as the puzzle. Both carry the same puzzle ID.
Which paper size should I choose?
US Letter for the United States and Canada, and A4 for most other countries. Each size has its own layout, so print at 100%.
Can I make a word search with my own words?
Yes. The word search generator turns 3–20 of your own words into a printable puzzle and answer key.
Are words hidden backward?
No. Starter words run across and down; Explorer adds a diagonal going down to the right. No word is ever spelled backward.
